ALMS stands for American Le Mans Series. ALMS Racing is a series that takes place in the United States and Canada. ALMS competition takes place between teams in five different classes. Race events are made up of a series of endurance and sprint races and can vary in length from around 90 minutes to 12 hours.

Based in Braselton, GA the ALMS was founded by a Georgia businessman and the ACO (Automobile Club L'Ouest) who are the organizers of the 24 hours of Le Mans. Beginning under the name the Petit Le Mans, the ALMS officially adopted the name American Le Mans Series in 1999, also taking on the ACO's rules.

This partnership between the ACO and ALMS makes it so that American Le Mans Series teams can earn an automatic berth in the ACO's 24 Hours of Le Mans. The top two finishers in the Petit Le Mans are automatically qualified for the following 24 Hours of Le Mans, a practice that began with the very first Petit Le Mans and continues to this day.

The ALMS was the first racing series in the United States and Canada to be recognized as a 'Green Racing Series.' This led to the ALMS implementing the Green X Challenge, awarded to the team in the Petit Le Mans that runs the cleanest, fastest and most fuel efficient. The Green X Challenge was soon expanded over the entire racing season and the two top Green Challenge finishers won spots in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. ALMS criteria for the Green X Challenge are based on three criteria, first the fuel emissions of each team, the overall speed the team ran and the team's overall fuel efficiency.

The American Le Mans Series is run under the same essential rules as their brother series the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Though both series share the same three basic classes, the ALMS has two additional classes that 24 Hours of Le Mans does not have called 'challenge classes.' These 'challenge' classes are formula based and are designed for racers with less experience who are just entering the series.
